As faithful readers of Autosport we were fascinated to read a recent article arguing that the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was probably not the place to host the final race of the year. The reason for this was because it rarely produced a fantastic race compared to, say, Brazil. Therefore it shouldn’t be used for title deciders. Well, here at Grand Prix Grand Tours, we would like to disagree. Slightly. First, because the title is usually decided long before the circus rolls into Yas Marina. Second, because the gang at GPGT-Towers LOVE Abu Dhabi!
Two of the team were here back in 2017, though not on a tour, and not together. It was one of those rare occasions (i.e. outside European F1 season) where our long-suffering wives were promised some attention. Chief blogger Simon stayed at the absolutely fantastic Ritz Carlton. Hotels in this part of the world really are a cut-above their European counterparts, and offer far better value. Watching the sun go down at the Louvre, or looking out at the Grand Mosque (opposite the Ritz Carlton) while drinking a cool beer, are quite special memories.
On the other side of the garage, Jay was entertaining his wife with a trip to the Grand Prix (who says romance is dead). Staying at the Atlantis on the Palm Jumeirah and driving in to the Yas Marina circuit daily was a fantastic experience, and nothing like visiting your typical British circuit (which always seem to be located on a blustery airfield). The benefit of this approach is that the partying in Dubai is perhaps slightly better than the partying in Abu Dhabi.
Whichever way you slice it, Abu Dhabi and Yas Marina are both fantastic places to visit, so we can’t wait for the seasons final race!
