A self drive holiday over 7 nights and 8 days, taking in some of the most glamorous destinations that Europe has to offer. But first, the roads! Day 1 of driving takes you through the French wine region, staying in the capital of Champagne, Reims. Along the way there’s the iconic pitlane of the original French Grand Prix circuit at Reims-Gueux. Day 2 takes you through the historic French city of Dijon (another French Grand Prix location), and then on to Lyon. From there onwards, the driving gets serious. Just over an hours drive from Lyon the Route Napoleon begins – 200 miles of stunning shelf-road, all the way down to Cannes. But don’t worry, you can do as much or as little of it as you fancy. After all, there’s plenty of Rosé waiting for you at the end. After the previous days adventures, the drive from Cannes to Lake Como will feel incredibly relaxing. The wide swooping SS1 coast road that runs from Nice to Genoa is the perfect opportunity to sit back, relax, and take in the views of the Cote d’Azur. While there’s an opportunity to stop in Genoa for a spot of lunch, the drive northwards is equally stunning as the roads wind up the mountains towards the Italian Lakes. The morning you wake up in Como gives the greatest opportunity to explore the most fantastic roads the world has to offer. Remember the driving scenes from Dr. No, Goldfinger, and Goldeneye? Today you get to drive them. Between Como and Davos sits “The Big Three” mountain passes: The Furka, Grimsel, and Susten Passes. You’re equally welcome to just take the motorway, but we don’t recommend it. The penultimate leg of your drive takes in Germanys ‘Romantic Road’, a wonderfully picturesque drive through the forests, towns, and mountains of Bavaria. Think Hansel and Gretel, and you’ll have an idea what’s in store for your day. Stopping for the evening in Wurzburg, and it’s time to start relaxing. The drive to Cologne is straightforward and unchallenging, but also gives you a chance to drive the Nurburgring Nordscheleife which is open to the public from 5.30pm on most weekdays.
Once on European soil, there is an average of 3h45m per day driving. But should you choose to, there is plenty of opportunity to drive the entirety of the Route Napoleon, Romantic road, or Andermatt Loop, which will take you a fair bit longer. With this in mind, we give this drive a difficulty rating of 2 out of 3 (Medium).
The Hotels on this drive are from our handpicked list, aimed at giving you the greatest variety available. From grand hotels on the shores of Lake Como, to the Alpine Retreats of Davos, we are sure you’ll be delighted with your home for 7 nights.
