The Portuguese Grand Prix has a rich and fascinating history on the Formula 1 calendar, stretching back to the sport’s earliest years. The race originally took place at the Circuito do Estoril near Lisbon during the 1980s, producing some of the most memorable moments of that era. Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost famously battled wheel to wheel at Estoril, with Nigel Mansell also taking iconic victories that have never been forgotten by those who witnessed them. The modern chapter of the Portuguese Grand Prix began at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, a stunning purpose-built circuit perched dramatically above the Algarve coastline. Designed with sweeping elevation changes and a flowing, technical layout, Portimão immediately captured the imagination of drivers and fans alike when it joined the calendar.
The circuit made its Formula 1 debut in 2020 where Lewis Hamilton took a historic victory, breaking Michael Schumacher’s all-time wins record in the process. Valtteri Bottas set the fastest lap on record at the circuit, while Max Verstappen pushed Hamilton hard throughout, hinting at the title battles that would follow in subsequent seasons. The 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix saw Hamilton victorious once again, with Verstappen and Bottas completing the podium in a race that underlined Portimão’s ability to produce compelling and unpredictable racing.
The Algarve itself adds a remarkable dimension to any race weekend. With its dramatic clifftop scenery, golden beaches, outstanding cuisine and warm climate, the region is one of Europe’s most beloved destinations. For fans making the trip, the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve delivers not only world-class Formula 1 racing but a destination experience that is truly difficult to match anywhere else on the calendar.
