The Great St Bernard Pass – in heavy fog

Nestled on the border between Italy and Switzerland, The Great St Bernard Pass barely gets a mention when you run a quick search for “Europe’s best road trip routes” but don’t let that put you off, this is an incredible blast up a mountain. Starting at the base of the Mont Blanc and the Monte Rosa, you effectively drive the ridge between the two highest mountains in the alps. You know you’re on your way (or on your way back) as you pass the Barrage des Toules (a bloody great dam, to you and me) which is, quite frankly, terrifying.

We shot up the pass behind an enthusiastic pair of drivers in a Porsche 991 and a Lotus Exige, and parked at the top to see nothing down the other side apart from fog. Part of me didn’t want to get out of the car, but we did as I was hungry.

Driving uphill at speed is a wonderful and confidence inspiring feeling, and on a clear day the view from the top undoubtedly make this a bucket-list drive. The view of the dam is especially awe-inspiring and. However, on that day we were just delighted to take in the drive and enjoy some home cooking when we reached the top.
